THE DETAILS The non-profit claims that the active ingredient, found in some 2,400 products from well known brands such as J&J-owned Neutrogena, Edgewell’s Banana Boat and Beiersdorf’s Coppertone, could contain benzophenone, a suspected carcinogen.

THE WHY? While a cosmetics industry body has dismissed the claim as ‘misleading’, Haereticus Environmental Laboratory Executive Director Craig Downs told Bloomberg, “The FDA doesn’t know what their safety is and it’s unconscionable that the FDA would allow something that we don’t know if it’s safe or not.”
