THE WHAT? UK-based confectioner Hotel Chocolat has snapped up cacao-powered beauty brand Rabot 1745 for the modest sum of £4, according to a report published by BBC News.

THE DETAILS Hotel Chocolat invested in the start-up some five years ago in partnership with Andrew Gerrie, and already owns a 47 percent stake in the business.

It has paid the token amount to gain full control; and has also committed to repay a £744,000 loan advanced by Gerrie to the start-up as well as issue him with some 200,000 shares in Hotel Chocolat.  the chocolate-themed range reported a loss of £400,000 in 2020.

THE WHY? Hotel Chocolat CEO and Co-founder, Angus Thirlwell told the BBC that the company had always intended to take full control of Rabot at some point in the future but had been prompted to buy out the remaining share after witnessing the brand’s fledgling success in Japan.
