THE WHAT? Unilever-owned Dove has announced the launch of a new, free, tool named My Hair, MY CROWN, as part of its Dove Self-Esteem Project, which aims to educate on cultural and societal experiences of Black communities.

THE DETAILS Designed alongside academic experts, the tool is created for group and classroom settings and aims to ‘boost self esteem and hair confidence in kids with coils, curls, waves and protective styles.’

The curriculum from the tool helps to teach users about the personal and social significance of hair, with a 90-minute workshop giving participants space to ‘self-identify key confidence-impacting stereotypes and experiences related to hair and/or beliefs about hair and beauty.’

THE WHY? The new downloadable tool is part of Dove’s belief that Black people shouldn’t feel they have to ‘divest themselves of their racial-cultural identity’ by changing their natural hairstyles to predominately white spaces.

Esi Eggleston Bracey, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Beauty and Personal Care at Unilever North America, said “Witnessing the ongoing mistreatment, bullying, and discrimination against Black children because of the way their hair naturally grows from their heads, inspired us to champion The CROWN ACT Legislation and to expand our Dove Self-Esteem Project tools and resources to address this issue in way that encourages young people to be confident in who they are and to freely express themselves without judgement — including their hair.”
