THE WHAT? Campaign group Level Up is calling for ‘toxic’ hair care products aimed at Black women to be removed from shelves, targeting hair care companies such as L’Oréal, Revlon and Motions.

THE DETAILS The campaign, named #NoMoreLyes, is stating that beauty retailers should remove harmful hair relaxers that contain lye, which can cause major health problems.

Campaign leaders also state that many that products that purport to be lye-free still contain harmful hydroxides, including calcium hydroxide and lithium hydroxide, which have been found to cause hair loss and scalp burns.

THE WHY? The campaign follows a recent study that found long-term use of lye-based relaxers may be linked to breast cancer, according to the Independent. There are also correlations with asthma, fibroids and fertility problems.

Group Co-Director Seyi Falodun-Liburd said it is, “disgraceful that well-established companies are still using harmful hydroxides in their relaxers.
“As a girl, I remember spending hours in the salon with my mum, watching countless women who looked like her enter, sit in the chair, have the relaxant cream slathered on, and leave looking like different women.

“None of us knew that these products could make us seriously, fatally, unwell. If the lives of Black women and girls are important to these companies, they’ll listen to the science and the voices of Black women and take these poisonous products off the shelves.”
